washed against the mountains, wearing in the benches over a few thousand years. The lower bench was formed when Lake Bonneville took a sudden drop in elevation, due to some climatic event. Eventually, the lake dropped lower and lower, until it finally became the Great Salt Lake when it was named such by the first pioneer explorers of the area. From the west about a mile away, when looking at the mountains, you can clearly see the two benches running north and south. As I leave the cal-de-sac and head up the mountain, the road becomes a gravel one lane road. Continuing up, it becomes a dirt road and then a narrower jeep road. There are several types of trails in the Bonneville Shoreline Trail system. There are areas set aside for hiking only, horses, biking, 4X4 and motorcycle trails. I stick to the 4X4 trails. There are many forks in the trail and I continually take the ones that lead me higher up the mountain. My Honda, although street legal, is a formidable dirt bike.
