As one who's been running Lectron carbs for literally decades, I'm no stranger to the design. In fact, John Penton had offered Lectrons as an op onal accessory back in the 70's on his Pen- ton/KTM's. Although today's Lectron has evolved quite a bit over their original design 40 years ago, the basic principal is the same. For those not familiar, Lectron carburetors have no jets. Yup, no pilot to change for temperature and /or eleva- on changes. No main jets either, no air screws to mess with, too. Just a metering rod. What I like the most about a well-tuned Lectron is the simplicity of it. A side bonus for those juggling mul ple bikes, no ny jets to clog when rides sit for lengths of me. We juggle many bikes here at Trail Rider. Several of our vintage mounts have been converted to Lectron since the benefits are very apparent. Es- pecially when swapping out well-worn Bings… As for modern bikes, yes, not all stock carbs are per- fect right out of the crate. Fortunately, we've got companies on our side like JD Je ng that have done the homework for us by providing off-road enthusiasts with a set of brass that really cleans up a fowl running bike. As one who considers bike maintenance and tuning "therapy," I enjoy the me spent nkering to get that perfect result — a clean pull from the bo om to the top. My go-to modern woods ride for the last year has been a 2019 KTM 300XC-W TPI. Having owned literally every genera on of the popular KTM 300, my TPI has con nued to impress me. It's been reliable and runs clean. Contrary to in- ternet cha er, mine's run perfect right out of the box. Having a hard me par ng with possessions, I s ll have my trusty 2013 300 XC-W in the stable, but truth be told, it hasn't seen much use since the pre y, injected steed rolled into the barn. Yes, we know how lucky we are to be enjoying all this new technology, but in reality, carb bikes s ll work pre y damn good when tuned properly.
