ECEA Round 4 Greenbrier Enduro Story by: Kevin Novello Photos by: Joann Hauser Rich Lafferty zeroed the course and took the Overall win. M y general packing/to-do list for a New Jersey enduro: Pack ripped shirt, mount cracked helmet visor, install cracked radiator shrouds, front fender and 29.5 inch bars. Oh, and don't forget the ultra thin, extra absorbent maxi pads to reconcile the the heavy flow of sweat from inside the helmet. Also, leave the ego at home. Why the odd list list? Because every time I attempt to race in NJ, I shred a shirt, bust a radiator shroud (or tear it off completely) and crack a visor from ricocheting off trees or auguring in to the soil. Regardless, I still manage to have a good time. I had a chance to ride a short stretch of the trails used at Greenbrier a few months back when testing out the Sherco and knew right then I was going to make the 8 hour trek to Port Elizabeth for the Greenbrier Enduro. For those of you that only venture to New Jersey for the Sandy Lane, you really ought to consider a follow up visit as this event is AWESOME. First off, it's all off-road (no license/ registration,) is well organized, and includes some of the best trail you will ever ride. 2011 ECEA Champion Jeff Pasqua admitted this was his favorite event. With the little bit of the rain that fell a couple of days before, conditions were about as good as it gets. The Club also cut miles - and I mean lots of miles, of new trail, insuring an excellent time for the large field of riders. dering what the hell he meant. Bright sunshine blanketed the region the morning of the race. With the leaves just starting to bud, the forest was a few days away from being awash in the green of summer. Jeff Pasqua finished second overall at Greenbrier. With the club making the route sheet available at sign up the day before (what a concept!), all I had to do was show up on time, get dressed and be hydrated before the 8:00 a.m. start. Easy enough. The start is located along the East side of Port Elizabeth The afternoon before the event, I stopped by the start to pick up my score card, info packet, etc and ran into Mike Lafferty at the sign up. "Make sure he's a row in front of me" he said to the girl working sign up. "Good idea!" I said "I'll have my helmet camera rolling and it will make for fun footage as you go by.(insert awkward silence) Er, that's what you had in mind, right???"I ask. /Cumberland road, which the course crosses at several locations. It seems that the terrain to the East of the road is a little loamier than the sandier side to the West - maybe I imagined it? Anyway, the first section was a few miles of faster single track along the Eastern half before coming to a known control where the event began in earnest. With Mike Lafferty just one row behind me, I knew he'd be all over me early and often. 2011 ECEA Enduro Champ Jeff Pasqua was "Ah, yeah - something like that" he said. And turned to walk 28 away, leaving me won- Trail Rider starting on the row behind Mike Lafferty, and I wasn't going www.TrailRider.com
