36 Trail Rider www.TrailRider.com As one who loves original survivors, this bike had it all. The icing on the cake was the full enduro kit with the much coveted small diameter "bullet" headlight, speedometer and leather tool bag was s ll intact. Even the original tool kit s ll lurked in the bag. I gladly handed over the 1500 bucks and as I was ge ng ready to load it in the van, Don asked me to wait a bit and ran into his house. He emerged minutes later with his framed NETRA Enduro School diploma and told a few tales of events he enjoyed the most. Don also shared that one of his biggest regrets in life was he never made B class. In fact, he was only one point shy of making B before career and family took priority and the Penton was parked. The wake-up process was performed in several stag- es. I had it running within days a er returning to my shop. Although, as expected, it was pre y red. The top end was refreshed and fortunately, the crank, main bearings, and transmission were fine. A new clutch was installed along with crank seals. The orig- inal Bosch points igni on system was swapped out for a new Vape CDI igni on system from the Czech Republic. The bonus of installing the Vape igni on besides a reliable big fat spark, is the Vape system delivers 12volts DC power to provide bright lights for road use. Our friend Kevin Donovan handled the instal- la on and even was able to source 12-volt LED bulbs for the OEM headlight and taillight. Carbure on on vintage rides can be a chal- lenge, especially on European bikes that were fi ed with Bing and Amal carburetors. The original 28mm Bing was quite worn and the bike ran pig-rich even a er doing all the recommended cures like replacing the nee- dle, needle jet, and eventually the slide. As expected, the body was worn. In searching for a replacement and given the fact that I've had such good luck with Lectron carbs over the years, we decided to bite the bullet and spring for a new Lectron Billetron Mini. Yes, they are pricey but for those who actually ride their vintage bikes, it's good money spent. The Bille- tron Mini transformed the li le Penton into a ride that runs clean from idle all the way to full song. The bonus is the bike will now tractor up a steep climb without a hint of bogging. Not that a 125 Sachs motor is a torque monster by any stretch of the imagina on but the Bille- tron Mini runs so cleanly down low that it now chugs up steep climbs without a hint of bog or burble.
