Now woods riding at night might seem a li le crazy to some but with a decent light kit, night riding can not only extend your riding sea- son, but it's also a tremendous amount of fun with an en rely different perspec ve of the landscape. While freshening last month's KTM feature, our 2019 KTM 300 XC-W dubbed the "Comfy Old Shoe", one of the upgrade components impressed us so much that we felt it needed its own story as the results were deserving of so much more than a paragraph or two. One of the lesser-known facts about the immensely popular KTM/Husky/GasGas two-stroke woods line is the stator on these models puts out a whopping 196 wa s. The system requirements such as igni on, fuel injec on pump, and charging system require less than 20 wa s, this leaves plenty of power to run a fan, heated grips, and yes, a big power headlight. We decided to take advantage of the monster stator by fi ng our '19 300 XC-W with one of Slavens Rac- ing's Motominded high-output headlight kits. Our basic goal was to cram as many lumens as possible into the stock KTM headlight shroud. What's a lumen you ask? The lumen is a basic unit for measuring brightness, just as the gram is a basic unit for mea- suring mass. For example, a typical 60-wa light bulb in your home might produce 800 lumens. Lumen is related to the word luminous, which means "bright" or "radiant." In discussing our wants and needs with Alec Morefield at Slavens Racing, Alec recommend- ed Slavens XL80 LED Light Kit that emits a whopping 9500 lumens while drawing 80 wa s, well within the capabili es of the stock stator. The XL80 LED Light Kit is sold as a complete plug- and-play fully assembled unit. The housing is man- ufactured by Motominded, known for its quality 3d printed components. The light itself is a Baja Designs LED XL Squadron, a four-bulb lamp that is fully adjustable for lt and aim. The beam emi ed is impressive, throwing light way down the trail while illumina ng off to the sides quite well also. We tested the XL80 LED in a rather bony sec on of trail with lots of hidden trail junk lurking in the summer overgrowth. Having the ability to rip a challenging trail in the darkness of night is a lot of fun. I've been riding this par cular piece of property pushing 25 years now and thought I knew every inch of trail.
