28 Trail Rider www.TrailRider.com Dual Sport's, aka Turkey Run's if you're a New En- glander, are a hoot. As one who enjoys ge ng in the zone on a bike while racking up the mileage with like-minded folks, dual sport events are my favorite form of off-road motorcycling. As one who cut his teeth riding NETRA Turkey Runs, I do get a kick out of the term "Dual Sport," as most of these types of events are most definitely a play on words. The terrain is typically quite challenging and most o en not suited for the average off-the-showroom floor dual sport motorcycle. Take the Hancock Quar- ry Run Dual Sport, for example. As former Trail Rid- er Bossman Paul Clipper used to say, "Do not take a dual sport to the Quarry Run" … These events seem to have evolved into something similar to a rugged enduro of days past with well over 100 miles involved, minus the mekeeping. Basically, you're much be er off riding a dedicated woods machine at today's Dual Sport events. As for the Monkey Bu event itself, the club and lo- ca on are rich in motorcycling history. Here's a li le background of the Wayne County Motorcycle Club. WCMC was founded around 1928 by a group of motorcycle enthusiasts from the ci es of Rochester, Syracuse, and between in upstate New York. Seven years later, in 1935, WCMC became club number 130 to be chartered with the American Motorcycle Associa on and is one of the old- est motorcycle clubs in the Na on. Shortly a er becoming chartered, the club purchased a small piece of property on Route 31 in Newark, New York, for a mere $8. Li le did they know that the structure they would build on that property would s ll be the WCMC headquarters nearly 90 years later. Regarding the property the Monkey Bu Dual Sport event is held on, much of the land and many of the trails used are deeply rooted in WCMC's his- tory. From the first WCMC event in 1935 through 2007, the club hosted the second longest, con n- uously scheduled AMA enduro (tradi onal, me- keeping), second only to the Jack Pine Enduro. For 1970 & '74, the AMA elevated the Newark Enduro to a Na onal Enduro. WCMC Pres Jerry Bulman remembers the '74 Na onal well as it ran right through his backyard. Mee ng all the greats was a treat to be remembered as a 9-year-old kid! For a variety of reasons, a er 2007, the Newark Enduro came to an end, though the wheels of the Club's leadership never stopped turning.
