At the end of Saturday, we were all in an cipa- on of the "Final Moto." To me, it was a chance for some of us to bang bars with our compet- itors, root on our friends, and watch some of our sports legends and heroes do their thing on a fun yet challenging grass track. There were nine final motos lined up in fin- ishing order, with the fastest ten riders lining up for the final moto of the day. It is not every day you can look down the line and see Hall of Famers Guy Cooper and Rodney Smith. ISDE Vets Fred Hoess, Rick Emerson, Brian Storrie, Chris Graber, and Allan Swartz, along with SETRA Champ Mike Grizzle and fast guys Gavin Punch, Robert Lightfeldt, and Tulsa Trail Riders Club President Steve Travis, wai ng for the gate to drop. The an cipa on of the crowd was palatable. Out of the gate, a huge dust cloud formed as the riders jockeyed for posi on and tried to get some clear air. Once the dust cleared, Guy Cooper was in the lead, followed closely by Rodney Smith, Brian Storrie, and Fred Hoess. These four guys put on a great show for the crowd and finished out strong in the same order. It was a true thrill to see these guys doing what they do so well. At the end of the two days of compe on, Rodney Smith won the overall, Guy Cooper and Rick Emer- son took second and third place, and it's worthy to note that Fred Hoess, riding a post vintage, drum brake 1984 . 5 Husky 250WR, came in 4 th Overall rid- ing against mostly modern 450's. How he did that I do not know, but it was fun watching him ride a vintage bike in the final moto, and at mes, a blur as he took the blue paint off my IT going by. Fun was had by all, and I wish I could do it all again next weekend! November 2024 39 Fred Hoess Fred Hoess
