20 Trail Rider www.TrailRider.com At this point, the name Baylor is almost synony- mous with the American Enduro racing. So, when Alan Randt of Na onal Enduro was ready to re re, Steward Baylor Jr. was the right man for the job – perhaps the only man. Despite already having a full plate as a pro racer, team owner and father, he stepped up and purchased the series. I caught up with him the week a er the Sumter ANEC, his first race as the owner and promoter of American Enduro. We'll start with the first and most obvious ques on: how was your first race as a series promoter? It was good! There were hiccups, but 99% of the event went well, and the public and the riders never got to see most of those behind-the-scenes hiccups. I think it's going to be a given at any race. There's always going to be something missed, or overlooked, or that could have been done be er. We took a lot of notes. From my perspec ve as a rider, it seemed like things went smoothly. Of course, rider and promoter have two very different perspec ves. Speaking of that, even though you'd raced Na onal Enduros at the pro level for many years, did anything really surprise you once you started promo ng? I would say there were a lot of surprises on the backside. When I decided to take this over and s ll race for another season, I knew it'd be a lot of work. But what surprised me most was the communica- on involved, due to Na onal Enduro being a club event. I'm not saying it would be easier without the clubs, it's a cool concept. Since clubs do all the work on trails, I can s ll race without having an unfair advantage, so it really works out for me. But with that, the amount of communica on that it takes to make sure we're all in agreement and accomplish what needs done, it was a huge undertaking.
