May 2026 37 – stunning. I have performed a number of "resto- ra ons" (a much-abused term) on vintage motor- cycles, and I like to think I do a pre y good job. Charles' work on the Frontera, however, puts my efforts to shame. In Charles' words, "My inten on was to restore it to be the pre est, shiniest, nicest Frontera on the planet. When I started the build, I vowed not to keep tabs on the budget – to build the bike that I always wanted". Looking at the result of his efforts, I believe few would argue that Charles accomplished what he set out to do. A few details, per Charles: Tank and side covers, " Torch Red-Traffic Yellow", painted by Brian Fedi- gan. Frame and swingarm, painted PPG "Crystal Silver Metallic", painted by the owner. Buchanan Spoke and Rim laced both wheels with Polished stainless-steel spokes on Akront high-shouldered polished rims. Both front and rear hubs were also polished. The engine was completely rebuilt by Hughes Bultaco, using all OEM or NOS Bulta- co parts. All hardware was replated and/or pol- ished. All Aluminum parts were hand-polished. Pirelli Garacross period-look res were u lized to duplicate the original tread pa ern. Speedometer cleaned, rebuilt, and face restored by West Valley Instrument. Shocks are from Vintco. Exhaust pipe ceramic finished in high-temp coa ng. Charles has indeed ended up with a fine, fine representa on of what has to be one of the best off-road bikes from the 70's era. Such a shame that the Frontera model ended up having such a rela- vely short produc on run, as by the late 1970's Bultaco was on its way out, with the original com- pany closing its doors in 1983. If you ever get the chance to ride one of these classic machines, jump at the chance. You will not be disappointed. -Ted Guthrie
