With the main frame complete, I moved onto all the other items that make up the frame (swingarm, triple trees, steering stem, wheel stay, skid plate, foot pegs, etc.), giving everything a once-over to be sure it was still usable before blast and paint. One item I was missing was a side stand and the design of the side stands for 72 Pentons was a one- year only design. Reproduction stands are available, but at $129 it would be a budget breaker, so I made up a new one with some scrap steel I had hanging around; not exactly factory, but it will get the job done. e last frame related item I tweaked was the foot pegs. e stock pegs on pre-76 Pentons were narrow, barely 1 inch wide, and only had eight little dimples of weld on them for grip, lousy design, both slippery and uncom- fortable. Works Connection makes weld on peg wideners that add about 3/8 inch to the width of the pegs and provide plenty of grip. Buying the wideners added $26 to the cost of the build, but it was money well spent. With all my frame-related items ready for paint, it was off to Custom Coatings in Sterling, Connecticut to see my buddy, Travis Heath, and get everything blasted for paint. Travis is a vendor I really enjoy doing business with. He does absolutely fl awless powder coating with quick turn- around and he knows bikes, so when I get a frame back from him, it only has pow- der where it should. Over the years, he has done several Penton frames for me, as well as a bunch of other stuff and I am never disappointed. e plan for the roach was to have Travis blast all the frame-related bits, then bring it back here and do a rattle can paint job, but it seems Travis has been following the progress of this project in Trail Rider and wouldn't hear of me doing a rattle can paint job on this build and off ered up a February 2016 35
