recommended" signs which kept you alert and on your game as you sliced through the side of the hills and cliffs. (You can check out the GoPro footage on my YouTube channel: Ciaran Wilcox.) Scoring was done manually, requiring the teams to self-monitor lap times in order to be prepared for a rider swap or pit stop. With no live results, there was no means to determine the position you held in your class. It was a flashback to the way scoring used to be han- dled in years past which fit perfectly with the laid-back Southern feel of the event. They continued through the race gaining familiarity and comfort with the course after each lap. After the race ended, riders returned to their pits for the typical bench racing, load- ed up and convened in the main lodge to learn of the final results. Chip and Dariush placed second in their class having completed a total of seven laps in the six-hour timeframe. Highland Park is equipped with "arrive and ride" rentals of current model KTM's or Al- ta's in varying engine size, or you can bring and ride your own bike. If you opt to rent, the resort provides unlimited gas as part of the reasonable rental fees and machines serviced regularly in the onsite service department. KTM World, touted to be the largest KTM dealership in the world, is located on the property and includes a full retail shop with extensive inventory of any gear to purchase or rent during your stay. Highland Park rents "rustic" climate-controlled cabins that sleep four to six, with a mini kitchen, sitting area, charcoal grill and campfire. A nearby bath- house provides free warm showers and bath- room facilities. The riding areas are extensive with three motocross tracks built for varying riding levels, as well as a track specifically for Pee Wee riders. The resort has more than 90 miles of diamond-rated trails of recom- mended skill levels providing extensive off- road woods riding opportunities. Definitely take a look at this facility if you're looking to enjoy an off-road amusement park at reasonable prices. While I didn't have the benefit of attending the race with the boys this year, it sounded like a great time run by extremely friendly people and hopefully it's the start of a new tradition for New Year's Eve in the years to come.
