White Lightning Runs Buffalo
10th Annual Carolinas White Lightning
Cross Country Classic
Rounds 1 & 2 of AHRMA's
John Penton / Preston Petty National
Cross-Country Series
By Al Roof
One hundred sixty-seven vintage cross country en-
thusiasts from as far away as Alaska made the trek
to the forested site of the 10
th
Annual
Carolinas White Lightning Cross Country Classic.
Among them were four-time AMA National Enduro
Champion Terry Cunningham, GNCC stalwart Tim
Shepard, former Supercross East contender Randy
Richardson, and ultra-fast newcomer Tim Williams.
Founded by ISDT veteran Greg Holder in 2009, the
White Lightning makes up the first two rounds of
the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Associa-
tion (AHRMA) Preston
Petty / John Penton National Cross-Country Series.
Following a seven-year run in Chester County,
South Carolina, and an ill-fated relocation to a site
in Elberton, Georgia, the White Lightning found a
new home this year at seven-time
National Champion Randy Hawkins' Silver Hawk
Plantation, near Buffalo, South Carolina.
Buffalo is in the central part of Union County.
The town took its name from nearby Buffalo Lick
Springs, an area featuring an expanse of large, flat
rocks. According to tradition dating back to the Co-
lonial era, herds of buffalo frequented the area and
were often seen licking the rocks, attracted by their
salt content.
