10 Trail Rider Peckam. Ron ended up on a club team riding a 125 Penton, and even though he was a 250 rider he took home a silver medal. The most notable ISDT was in 1973 in the Berk- shires when the American Silver Vase team won the event with the team of Malcolm Smith, Dick Burleson, Ed Schmi and Ron Bohn. This was the first me a USA team won an ISDT Silver Vase, and it would be nearly 20 years before it happened again. Ron has vivid memories of this event, like on the first day a er ge ng his bike out of the impound area. At the star ng line, as the min- ute hand passed Go, his bike wouldn't start and he was penalized right off the bat! He put that behind him and was determined to be faster in the special tests and be a spoiler in the class for his team and country. He also remembers on day four that Jack Lehto, the team manager, stopped each of the team members and told them, "You're in good shape. Ride smart and we can win this!" On day five, the Swedish team was out of the compe on and started roo ng for the Ameri- can team because they were all on Husqvarnas! At several of the transfer sec ons, the Swedish girls wearing blue and yellow coveralls handed Ron and his team mates hot berry juice they had picked in the Massachuse s woods. The team of Ron Bohn, Ed Schmidt, Dick Burleson, and Malcolm Smith won the 1973 ISDT Silver Vase, and it was a proud moment when they held the silver vase over their heads as the na onal anthem played. A er compe ng in enduros for so long this "drop the flag and go" type of race appealed to Ron, and he went on to win a record-winning streak of 23 consecu ve overall wins.
