Jeff Melik piloted his GasGas XC 300 to second overall at the Curly Fern things. Being able to thread your handlebars between two trees at 40 mph amazes me when I think about it. We then went up against a back-to-back section which was fast. I had a big learning opportunity here which I can share with others. Because the day was all e-checks, I was put into a tough spot as the eight mile section had an e-check on the Curly Fern Enduro AA: 1. Jeff Pasqua (OCCR); 2. Jeff Melik (RRMC); 3. Do you go in early and risk those seconds on the chance that you make up an extra point, or do you go in on the 30 and save those seconds at the end of the day? I was left with this decision and I picked the latter option. WRONG… The correct choice was to go in early because points are more valuable than seconds. I made that error at the time so hopefully you can learn from my error. After this back-to-back section, we faced the 3-mile sprint section again. A few years ago this was my least favorite trail but now it is one of my favorites. The roots, obstacles, and wide-open field sections are a lot of fun. This time, I got into a groove and was able to save a few more seconds. The deep trenches of ruts in the woods were tough but proper line selection was key. At the end of the day, the grand champion award went to Jeff Pasqua with a 7-446 who just edged out Gas Gas Rider, Jeff Melik, by 15 seconds. Third place in AA went to Ben Smith with an 8-529. High Point A went to Robert Lapinski who excelled throughout the day on his YZ 250F. High Point B went to Kevin McGeachen while High Point C went to Albert Santelli. And last but not least, DER won the club team race. Thanks to SJER for a great event and stay tuned for round 3 of the ECEA enduro series at the PBER Enduro.
