As for controls, another "gi " from my old buddy Howie was a set of NOS Andre's Bars. Andre Malherbe was a force to be reckoned with, winning three 500cc World Championships while riding for Factory Honda. I remem- ber those who ran Andre's Bars back in the day were held in high regard. Moun ng a pair on this Maico project was the icing on the cake so to speak. As for grips, we dressed Andre's fine bars with a pair of Preston Pe y "Works GP" grips. It makes me smile to give props to my legends and heroes in this manner. The crowning jewel of most builds is the gas tank. There's something so unique about a Maico "coffin" tank. The construc on being nothing but bent and welded alumi- num sheet is so simplis c, almost agricultural as I'm sure style wasn't what they were shoo ng for when those German engineers designed this tank. I suppose they were just looking for a vessel to hold the fuel. Nothing more, nothing less. In looking at what we had to work with, my friend Vito LaVopa (Young V) offered his alumi- num polishing skills to buff up the old tank. The end re- sult was a piece that looks just like chrome. I don't know how many hours you've got into this tank V but huge thanks buddy. Dressed with a set of decals from SoCal Maico wrapped up the project. Our plans for this old ride are some vintage cross-country racing and general horsing around. Being a 1977, it fits into the NETRA true vintage class and Post Vintage for AHRMA. As a big German myself, we should get along just fine! February 2024 35 Aluminum tank polished like chrome Aluminum tank polished like chrome
