June 2024 19 Ruby Moto R7 By Slavens Racing Ruby Moto R7 By Slavens Racing Those with even basic mechanical skills should find in- stalling/upgrading a stator a rela vely simple task. Ba- sically, drain the engine oil, put the bike on the stand, and remove the seat, fuel tank, and flywheel cover. (It does help to hold the shi lever down with a bungee cord to ease removing and installing the cover). The stator is located inside the cover and once removed, it's easily accessible. (Unlike bikes of yesterday, there's no need for a flywheel puller). The stator is held in place with three 4mm hex head cap screws. I would like to men on KTM does a wonderful job in making sure these li le hex-heads don't loosen up by apply- ing some tough thread locker. To keep from stripping the screws, I clamped on a pair of Vise-Grip pliers to the heads to break the screws loose then spun them out with a 4mm hex driver. Given the fact that you should replace the igni on cover gasket (KTM part # 0025050166) while performing this job, you might as well order all three new screws (Part# 0012050253S) in the process just to have them on hand. Installa on was the reverse order, and the en re installa on took less than a half hour and that's taking my me. With the upgraded stator installed, it was me to choose a headlight that would be able to take advan- tage of all the extra wa age of Rick's Hot Shot stator. For this applica on, our friends at Slavens Racing suggested the Moto Minded/Ruby Moto R7 head- lamp insert. Emi ng a whopping 7500 lumens while requiring 59 wa s seemed to fit the bill perfectly as it leaves room to power heated grips or an electric fan if so desired. With this project completed, the real test would be a proper night ride. Now living in Maine, it gets dark rather early most of the year. In fact, a er daylight savings me is upon us, it's pitch black before 5 pm. Most serious trail riders in these parts are accustomed to riding a er dark to get back to the truck. Thanks to modern technology, today's LED lights are flat-out amazing. In par cular, the Ruby Moto R7 chosen for this project. The R7 doesn't just emit a beam, it lights up the night with authority. A flood light so to speak and with a draw of 59 wa s, the requirement is well within the capabili es of Rick's stator, even at lower revs of a night trail pace. As this project evolves, I'm star ng to dig how well these new four strokes work. I guess some mes you can teach an old dog new tricks! Rick's Motorsport Electrics Hot Shot Stator fits all current Austrian-built off-road models including MX models.
