12 Trail Rider www.TrailRider.com ANEC Cross Timbers - My Take By Jeff Debell Everybody loves race day. Rachel's got the event report nicely covered, so here's a couple of ob- serva ons from the (far) less-skilled of your two intrepid reporters. I showed up at 8:30 Friday to help the ANEC crew with last-minute setup stuff, and was greeted by a three-year-old covered in dust, mud, dried fruit juice, and who knows what else...and grinning ear to ear while showing me the toy dirt bike he'd been "racing" around the ny track he'd made in the dirt. He could have easily won the tryouts to play "Pig Pen" in the next Charlie Brown cartoon special. He was Cory Bu rick's youngest son, Bronson, and later in the day, he was s ll hard at it, playing in the dirt with his older brother and sister, and Stew Baylor's boy, Levi. No TVs, no iPads, no noses stuck in front of computer or television screens, just a bunch of all-Ameri- can kids having a ball just as nature intended... OUTDOORS!! Bronson's mom said it was useless to wash him off as he'd be filthy again in five minutes, and I'm be ng there's a bathtub ring to scrub off every night a er li le Bronson gets washed up for bed. All I know is it sure made my heart happy to see kids playing outdoors without a care in the world under mom or dad's watchful eye. Childhood (and paren ng) done right. I never even unloaded my bike at the USSE sprint enduro/qualifier a couple of weeks ago, but I wanted to get a feel for the Oklahoma course. I took my trusty 26-year-old KTM 400 out and rode a couple of the test sec ons with Trail Rider's intrepid photographer Art Pepin, and later did a couple more solo. I came across local club mem- ber Ma Frymire cu ng up a tree that had blown down across the trail overnight. He gave me some background on the Cross Timbers riding area. James Jenkins James Jenkins
