hen the 2013 season came to a close in early
November I decided that I needed a break, so I
put the bike away to relax for a month or so
and recoup from the season. Unfortunately, Mother Na-
ture had plans for a much longer recess than I had
planned or really could afford to take: that's the price we
pay for living in southern Vermont. The three-hour drive
to the Demoranville Farm in Freetown, MA, seemed to fly
by; I had a bit of a lead foot and was eager to get the sea-
son started.
Pulling into the start locaon I was pleasantly surprised
with how dry the area appeared to be. The green flag
drop was scheduled for 1:30 pm and the morning heats
were running smoothly so it looked like everything would
go off on me. I followed my usual roune of signing up
and doing a lile course recon of the first mile or so.
Just as I was making my final preparaon (taping my
hands) at around 12:40, Zack Toth took the checkers, nar-
